Abstract: This paper seeks to answer the question whether, and if so, to what extent, the Museum of Ethnography’s food collection represents Hungarian peasant food culture, for which it was created to preserve. The backbone of the collection is formed of objects related to ‘archaic’ cooking processes. Thus, one finds here not only the usual utensils for cooking and baking, but also implements used around the fire. Among groups of objects organised by function, the foremost are those for food preparation, storage, and consumption. But, to what extent are they suitable for the study of food tradition/heritage? |
