Abstract: In Folk theology and lived religiosity, the author presents the findings of his research carried out over the past decades in the Catholic Hungarian (Csángó) communities in the eastern counties of Romania. The study is primarily an analysis of data collected through fieldwork conducted in the author’s native village of Arini (Magyarfalu) in Bacău county. The focus is on phenomena in lived (vernacular) religiosity, addressing issues that have received little attention in ethnographic research to date, as well as issues that are being examined for the first time. These include, for example, faith, faith-based (existential) cognition, images of God, prayer and prayer events, (religious) sin, and the theme of the volume’s title, folk theology. The chapters on divine judgment, curses, prayer, miracles, the Eucharist, and Mariology supplement the existing research history with a number of new features. The chapters of the volume follow the same structure. An outline of the research history and the most fundamental scientific questions on the given subject are followed by an analysis of the ethnographic data. The ethnographic analysis of each topic is informed by scientific findings in church history, theology, and pastoral psychology, in addition to Hungarian (and in some cases Romanian and English) religious ethnographic research. |
